At almost every meeting I attended that the sack of shit Platinum instructed the IBO’s to prospect people under the age of 35. That’s where the best prospects are he’d claim. Those were the movers and the shakers. These are the people who are going to make it big in Amway. He also said this was the age group who were most unlikely to have heard the name Amway. He pointed out that people older than 35 probably had negative opinions on Amway because they or someone they knew had already tried the business and failed.
Under 35 huh? Did Ambot have his ears on? We were past that moving and shaking demographic. Our time had come and gone. According to the Platinum - and everything he said was unquestioned by Ambot to be the gospel truth - it was too late for us. So what were we doing wasting our time and money is all I could think when I heard the “don’t prospect anyone over 35” speech at the Amway meetings.
The Amway business opportunity is presented in a tantalizing manner by a charismatic cult leader to appeal to kids recently out of school, new immigrants, the unemployed, the disabled, and stay at home parents. Its also appealing to people looking to expand their circle of friends. Attending Amway meetings is belonging to an expensive social club.
The problem with most of the people in the above groups is that they usually do not have money to invest in Amway. They might be able to scrape together the $150 join up fee that will give them membership to the social club and let them attend Amway meetings several times a week. Sometimes they can find money or use a credit card to invest hundreds or thousands of dollars in the Amway scam. They spend long hours attending meetings and trying to find prospects and earn a tiny amount of money if they earn anything at all.
We didn’t really know anyone in those groups mentioned above. A neighbor in her 50’s had been injured at work and was off on disability and said money was tight. Ambot was all over her telling her Amway was the answer to her financial problems. Fortunately she didn’t believe him. Ambot would “counsel with upline” about her and get “lines” to use to overcome her objections. Ambot would get so angry that she wasn’t listening to his tirade on starting her own Amway business and he was quoting a bunch of bullshit from his upline that there was nothing else out there for her and she was missing out on a great business opportunity that was going to give her residual income forever and she’d never have to worry about money again.
I was uncomfortable belonging to a business that preys on the disadvantaged. In good conscience I could never badger anyone into attending an Amway meeting or buying overpriced shitty products.
IBO’s are given a demographic list of people to prospect. Bottom line is they prey on everybody not just the disadvantaged, but that group seems to be the easy mark. The relatively gullible prey are people who are in financial straits and could use money and/or could use friends.
I feel so much relief that Ambot and I did not ferret out these people and bring even more grief to their lives.
Notice what that Platinum asshole was saying: Get people who are young, inexperienced, and stupid.
ReplyDeleteSince thousands of people turn 18 every day, there's always a supply of such types. Amway depends on that fact.
Today, however, Amway suffers from one big disadvantage: the company has the indelible image of a wheezing, creaky, 1959-era sales-pitch racket for old farts. As a result, most young persons are immediately turned off by it. What 18-year-old wants to get involved in a crummy soap-suds and cheap cosmetics scam, run by guys who look like your elderly uncle?
Young persons are strongly influenced by IMAGE. And since the image of Amway is still that of some fat-assed Platinum geezer driving a clunky car, they are turned off. To them, Amway is totally "uncool."
Hi Anonymous. Yes judging by your description no young person would want to be a door to door soap salesman. But Amway scams them by saying you can work part time 10 to 15 hours a week in your spare time and make thousands of dollars a month. That sales pitch is appealing to students or young adults working minimum wage jobs.
DeleteAll the Amway cult leader has to do is brainwash them to believe Amway is cool.

The idea of Amway ever being "cool" makes me laugh. Amway is about as cool as a whalebone corset and high-button shoes.
ReplyDeleteAnonymous - Amway being cool makes all laugh. Amway is only cool to a bunch of brainwashed broke losers.
DeleteHi Anna.
ReplyDeleteFollowing is a comment left by a reader on one of joecool's recent blogpost. This pretty much sums up Why one should stay away from scAmway.
Our community has had the very unfortunate opportunity to watch a family in our neighborhood engross themselves in the unlucrative amway business model. The husband is the primary person involved with Amway as an IBO . The wife has a full time day job outside of amyway and then attends the amyway meetings and events at night and on the weekends to support the husband. In reality, the wife has two jobs. They are FOUR years in and still no new cars. Both husband and wife are driving cars that are over TEN years old and one is leaking oil. The husband and wife who are involved in the Amyway business are in their mid 30s AND are living with their parents since starting the Amway business! Both parents have full time non Amyway day jobs. Really? Want more? Oh the house they are living in is a RENTAL! They don’t even own the house. So there are 4 adults (or more) living there to pay the bills. Three of the adults have regular non amyway jobs and one person works for Amyway. If Amway was soooo lucrative why aren’t the other three adults quitting their day jobs and joining Amway? Because the non Amyway day jobs are paying the bills!
It is suspected these individuals tell prospects that they own the house and if you join amyway, you can have what we have but if you knew the truth, they have nothing! Lie until you make it right? It does not appear they have generated any wealth since joining Amyway. All of us have watched new prospects show up and then soon disappear. In four years there are only TWO individuals involved with Amyway that have consistently showed up out of sooooooo many. Clearly you can see that the odds of making it in Amyway are very low.
If the Amyway business model is sooo lucrative why are these two individuals still living with their parents in their mid 30s? Don’t believe any story stating they are there to help family, it’s a temporary situation, or they believe in charity work. Not true. They are living with their parents (who are enabling them also) because they can’t afford a home or to live independently while working at Amyway. Think about it. Four years in: Where are the new cars? Why are they renting? Why don’t they own a new house?
Don’t believe any posts on social media sites stating how great their life is because they work at Amyway. A picture with folks smiling saying they live the high life is just a picture with no facts supporting the statement. It is just a picture and nothing more. I guess this amyway person is living the high life because he has his parents helping pay the bills. Don’t pay an Amyway person’s rent.
Success is right around the corner or is Debt right around the corner?

Fucking creepy right?
I just want to say that you and joecool are doing a great service to mankind through your blogs.
Love from india :)
Hi QuitAmway. That story is the same story told over and over again about people's Amway experiences. Fake it till you make it. Have to work a job to be able to afford to buy shitty overpriced Amway products.
DeleteThe thing is if people really could get rich in Amway (or any other scam out there) there'd be more people doing it.
Who are rich in Amway? The owners and the cult leader who got in early enough to be at the top of the pyramid and formed their own cult sect to make more money off the Amway tool scam.
And thanks for loving us from India!
Watch this video. Hilarious.

HI QuitAmway. Of course I'm interested in anything that starts off with the title Fuck Amway. I watched some of it but it's kind of long so I'll get back to it later.
